Capitol Corridor train introduces Wi-Fi service

Quote:Just in time for online shopping on Cyber Monday - that's today - the Capitol Corridor will start offering free Wi-Fi service on all of its trains.

"This is the No. 1 amenity our riders have requested - over and over and over and over again," said Luna Salaver, Capitol Corridor spokeswoman. "This is our holiday present to riders who've been clamoring for it."

The Capitol Corridor service - managed by BART, subsidized by the state and operated as part of the Amtrak system - runs 32 weekday trains between Sacramento and Oakland with two trains going east to Auburn and heading to San Jose. The service will also be offered on the other state- subsidized intercity trains in California - the San Joaquin from Oakland to Bakersfield, and the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.

Amtrak is scheduled to announce the Wi-Fi service at events this morning. The national passenger railroad already has the service on its popular Acela trains and some other East Coast routes as well as on the Cascades line in Washington and Oregon. It's also available to sleeping-car passengers on the Coast Starlight.

While the Capitol Corridor is considered an intercity train, and not a transit service or commuter railroad, it's frequented by regular riders, including students heading to and from UC Davis, tech workers bound for San Jose and workers traveling between homes and jobs in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Many of them ride with their laptops and work while they ride, some of them counting time on the trains as part of their workdays.

"The days when people were satisfied with relaxing and staring out the window are long gone," Salaver said. "People want to be productive."
